Scope and ContentWithin this collection of correspondence, there are letters dated 1740s-1780s, concerning the Jacobite Rebellion, Parliamentary elections, and entry into the medical profession (GD 29/1). Letters, dating from 1842-1847, detail Thomas Goldie Scot's early surgical career in India and Gibraltar (GD 29/2/1); GD 29/2/2, dated 1852-1859, offers insight into his time in Edinburgh and Shorncliffe Military Hospital (Kent), before he served during the Crimean War and the Indian Mutiny. In addition, the collection includes general correspondence between Thomas Goldie Scot's colleagues and acquaintances, letters from his family and friends, and notes regarding the collection by his descendents.

Archival historyThomas Goldie Scot MD LRCSEd 1841 was born in Madras in 1820. He gained his MD at the University of Edinburgh in 1841, his thesis being “On apoplexy, its varieties, diagnosis and treatment” and gained his Licentiateship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh the same year. He had a notable career - Army Surgeon (Hon. Dep. Insp. Gen Army); Assistant Surgeon (13th Foot) 1841; Surgeon 1853; Surgeon Major 1861 then retired in 1867, having served in Crimea 1854 and Indian Mutiny 1857. The collections include correspondence, two Goldie Scot medals and a small collection of his instruments.
