TitleAbnormal obturator artery
DescriptionArtery. An adult male left os innominatum with the inguinal ligament, obturator membrane and part of the anterior abdominal wall, dried and varnished, showing an abnormal obturator.
From the bifurcation of the left common iliac artery the external iliac and hypogastric arteries are injected and painted red. The ductus deferens with the testicular artery 15 preserved proximal to, in, and distal to the inguinal canal. Shortly before the external iliac artery passes deep to the inguinal ligament to become the femoral, artery arises the inferior epigastric artery which before ascending medial to the abdominal inguinal ring and passing proximally between the rectus abdominis muscle and the posterior lamella of its sheath gives off an abnormal obturator artery which passes medially over the superior ramus of the pubis to gain and enter the obturator canal. The deep iliac circumflex artery arises from the lateral aspect of the external iliac slightly distal to this common trunk and is traced in this dissection as far as the middle of the iliac crest. From the hypogastric artery the iliolumbar artery arises midway between the bifurcation of the common iliac and the bifurcation of the hypogastric and its iliac branch is traced as far as the iliac crest. At the bifurcation of the hypogastric artery the anterior trunk is much the smaller and giving rise to two or three small vessels which have been cut short continues as the internal pudendal artery which has been traced in this dissection as far as the ischial spine to the deep surface of which it has been artificially secured. From the posterior trunk there arises a comparatively insignificant vessel which passes horizontally towards, but in the dissection does not reach the obturator canal. The posterior trunk then curves round the superior border of the great sciatic foramen as the superior gluteal artery to be distributed on the dorsal surface of the os innominatum.
