DescriptionPlaster cast model taken from life of an elderly male head with half the brain exposed mounted on a metal pin and wooden stand. The upper right portion of the skull has beeen removed to display the brain underneath
This appears to be the same as a cast in The Old Anatomy Museum of Trinity College, Dublin. The cast was taken from James Conway, a man who died in April 1889 at the age of 'reputedly' 111. He was said to be in 'perfect health' until three weeks before his death, and 'retained full possession of all his faculties to the last moment of his life' - apart from being a little hard of hearing
Conway was autopsied by Daniel Cunningham (1850-1909), professor of anatomy at Trinity Collegem, who produced a cast of his head and preserved his skeleton (now in Trinity College anatomy museum). Cuningham showed that Conway's brain was free of the atrophy that would be typical at such an adanced age. The brain changes associated with aging was a particular interest of Cunningham, and he discusses this case in his book "Contibutions to the surface anatomy of the cerebral hemispheres" from 1892, which included an illustration based on this plaster cast (attached) The casts were widely distributed by the Dublin firm Casciani & Son {CI - Aug 2022, based on information from TCD anatomy museum}
