TitlePlaster model of the face deformed by a large fibroma, removed by Robert Lison
DescriptionPlaster model of the head and face showing deformity produced by a large fibroma of the left maxilla
Part of a series showing the pre- and post-operative aspects of a surgery by Robert Liston
Of a female aged 40. Six years previously had received a blow over the left maxillary air sinus from the head of a child. Immediately thereafter she felt the part hard and by the end of two years a definite tumour had developed and during the subsequent two years gradually increased in size. She then became pregnant and during that time the tumour enlarged rapidly.
A year ago she had another child followed apparently by the menopause when the tumour seemed to grow more vascular and increased in size. The deformity obstructed the vision of the left eye and depressing the left angle of the mouth caused much annoyance from the escape of saliva. The left maxilla with the tumour was excised and she made a good recovery. A year later she returned to have a gold prosthetic palate fitted
The tumour can be seen to extend almost to the level of the eyebrow, overhangs the mandible and reaches posteriorly to the auricula while anteriorly it deflects the nose to the right and draws downwards and laterally the left angle of the mouth.
