Object numberHC.I.25.1-1
TitleCarbolic acid spray
Creator Edinburgh Gardner
DescriptionCarbolic acid sprays of the type developed by Josph Lister for use in surgery. Both the wound and the atmosphere of the operating table would be sprayed with a fine mist of watered-down carbolic acid in order to kill bacteria.
When applying a dressing the spray was localised around the wound, in a longer operation the spray filled the theatre. The vessel was heated by a spirit lamp placed beneath it. A solution of carbolic acid diluted to 1 in 20 was put in the glass jar. Steam is released from a small hole in the horizontal tube causing a vacuum in the vertical tube leading to the acid being dissolved in the fine steam spray. This model was made by J Gardner of Edinburgh in 1875.
