Cerebral abscess
Object numberGC.15232
TitleCerebral abscess
DescriptionCoronal slice of brain, showing cerebral abscess, from a girl aged 7 years.
She was off colour for three weeks, vomiting and then developed photophobia for one week. Before death she was in a coma for several hours.
A well developed, soft haemorrhagic area is seen in the left inferior front gyrus, involving both grey and white matter. On the posterior surface of the slice, a smaller greenish patch lies above the haemorrhagic area and just below the left lateral edge of the genu. The presence of this abscess , into which haemorrhage has occurred, has resulted in swelling of the left cerebral hemisphere and shoft of midline structures to the right.
Microscopy suggests that the abscess is about a week old.
Post-mortem note: streptococcal septicaemia
