DescriptionDry-point by Edmund Blampied. An actual Guernsey scene. A farmer's wife holds the sufferer's head, and a friend his feet. The operator was a farmer, whoese father-in-law had (1860 to 1870) been the captain of a 'three-master'. It was customary for the captain to act as physician, surgeon and dentist.
On the captain's retirement the farmer inherited his dental instruments and performed extractions on farm-hands, servants and Breton potato-diggers.
Blampied recalled having one of his own teeth pulled one morning before school by the same man.
