DescriptionEngraving on paper by T. Cook (1744-1818), after the 1738 painting by William Hogarth (1697-1764) and published by C. G. & J. Robinson, Paternoster Row, London, 1 February 1798. Cook specialised in engraving Hogarth paintings and completed a great many of them.
This scene can be identified as being in the area of Charing Cross, London, because the bronze equestrian statue of Charles I by Hubert Le Sueur can be seen in the background. As with any Hogarth-related artwork, there are many interesting depictions of social activity. Within the context of dentistry, there are a number as follows.
The barber's red-and-white stripped pole is projectd across the street and below hangs a sign a man's head with mouth open wide and a hand using an instrument to extract a manibular tooth. The sign reads:
Shaving Bleeding &
Teeth Drawn w.th a Touch
Ecce Signum
Below is the barber's shop through the window of which an apprentice can be seen shaving a clinent's chin to the light of twelve candles in the window pane. This would have been the same light that dental extraction was carried out by.
