After a copper-plate engraving by Jacob Gole (c. 1660-1737) from an etching by Andries Both (c. 1612-c. 1650).
The unknown artist has modified the scene by reversing the figures and painting a slightly altered setting.
The patient's his distressed wife and child and several other spectators watch the tooth-drawer perform a painful operation.
