DescriptionSet of scalpels in a velvet-lined case awarded by Francis Mitchell Caird, Lecturer (1853-1926).
Four, of different blade shapes, are by Gardner, Edinburgh and seem to be designed for the case. The fifth is more modern, with a replaceable blade, (a spare blade is in the case) and made by Paragon. Three spaces in the case remain for other (not included) instruments.
The case includes an engraved label on the lid that reads:
"School of Medicine of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh
Surgery Session 1902-03, 3rd Prize senior
F. M. Caird, Lecturer"
