TitleModel of the skull showing treatment for a Le Fort III fracture
DescriptionModel of the skull showing treatment for a Le Fort III fracture
The wax model is the left lower quarter of the skull and is part of a series showing orthognathic surgery (surgery of the jaw)
The red line marks the pathway of the Le Fort III fracture. Also known as craniofacial dissociation, it passes across the zygomatic arch and across the back of the orbit. It is typically caused by a blow to the nasal bridge or upper maxilla. Symptoms include swelling over the middle of the face, bruising around the eyes, lengthening of the face, and displacement of the eyeballs back in the socket, which may cause the eyes to appear hooded.
Treatment requires surgery. This model shows stabilisation of the zygomatic arch with a metal plate, which will be left in place for 6-8 weeks.
