DescriptionModel of the left lower quarter of the skull
Part of a series showing orthognathic surgery (surgery of the jaw)
This model shows the position of a Le Fort II fracture, marked in red. This type of fracture usually results from a blow to the maxilla, and usually extends from the pterygoid plate at the back of the upper teeth, through the maxilla and the inferior orbital margin and across the nasal bridge. From the front, it is shaped like a pyramid.
Symptoms include swelling over the middle third of the face, which is mobile, and bruising around the eyes, with a step deformity at the lower orbital edge, which can be seen on this model. There may be numbness in the cheek. Treatment is surgical stabilisation
