Retroperitoneal fibroma in lower abdomen

Object numberGC.2754
TitleRetroperitoneal fibroma in lower abdomen
DescriptionRetroperitoneal fibroma in lower abdomen
From a male aged 48
Two and a half years previously a nodule appeared in the right groin and slowly and painlessly increased in size and pressed into the scrotum and pelvis, as well as toward the lumbar region. There were no subjective symptioms, but latterly the bulk of the tumour had interfered with his stooping.
The tumour was firm and painless, lobulated, and not very well defined marginally. At operation the tumour was found encapsulated and of different density in different parts. Its bulk and extent constituted the chief difficulty in enucleation. The bulk was comparatively avascular
The tumour forms a uniform projection in the right loin, and where it appraoches and enters the scrotum it is somewhat lobulated, with superiorly a few flattened cutaneous nodules.
Microscopic examination showed the tumour to be a cellular fibroma.
There was a gelatine and glycerine cast showing the external deformity produced by this tumour, but this was disposed of in Jan 1987.
