TitleForeign bodies from the stomach
DescriptionA collection of 84 foreign bodies weighing in total 248g, including iron wire twisted to make an object of definite size and shape, nails, screws, and parts of a horse-shoe extracted from the stomach of a male aged 27 who a year previously had swallowed a number of metal articles for a bet and since then had repeated the performance on several occasions either to obtain money or alcoholic drinks. Recently while in prison on account of attempted burglary he had swallowed some more pieces of metal.
He was not aware of having passed any of the objects. During two months he had had epigastric pain and indigestion. Radiography showed an aglomerated mass within the stomach. The forgeign bodies were easily removed by gastrotomy except one screw nail the point of which had penetrated the stomach wall at an area of localised fibrosis. Recovery was uneventful.
