A lymph node enlarged to measure 18 mm. in its long diameter occupies much of the retropharyngeal areolar tissue and between it and the posterior wall of the laryngeal pharynx a small cavity which contains pus and has an irregular necrotic surface is the remnant of the retropharyngeal abscess.
