From a male aged 1 5/12 years, the subject of enlarged cervical lymph nodes. He had orthopnoea and died suddenly when the retropharyngeal abscess was about to be incised without the Use of an anaesthetic. The pus contained streptococci.
The laryngeal pharynx is pressed towards the larynx and in the preparation touches the epiglottis. A lymph node enlarged to measure 18 mm. in its long diameter occupies much of the retropharyngeal areolar tissue and between it and the posterior wall of the laryngeal pharynx a small cavity which contains pus and has an irregular necrotic surface is the remnant of the retropharyngeal abscess.
