DescriptionSpecimen and Histological Glass Slide x1
Cystic thymoma
Clinical history:
From a male aet 18 years. Incidental finding at mass radiography. Spherical opacity in the right anterior cardio-phrenic angle. Thoracotomy 22.11.52. Cyst pedicled on the superior mediastinum.
Description of specimen:
Specimen consists of a tumour which has shelled readily from the surrounding tissue and which, on its external surface, shows the presence of underlying cystic areas and presents as a lobulated mass. On the cut surface the tumour is seen to consist of two parts and is roughly reniform in shape. In the "hilar region" is a solid tumour showing a varied appearance due to the presence of numerous small areas of homogeneous fleshy tissue, intervening fibrous strands and points of haemorrhage. Surrounding this is a second crescent shaped "cortical zone" consisting of multiple thin-walled cysts. These are completely translucent and in the septa between them are normal vessels, some of which are relatively large.
Microscopical examination:
The tissue consists solely of lymphocytes closely aggregated together. There are no Hassall's corpuscles. There are a few spaces existing into which haemorrhage has occurred and here many detached lymphocytes are also to be found.
