TitlePericardial sac with heart laid open, showing tuberculous pericarditis
DescriptionPericardial sac with heart laid open, showing tuberculous pericarditis a complication of tuberculosis.
From a man aged 34, originally a mason, but later in the Army until his heart became impaired after the battle of Algiers. He had symptoms of pulmonary tuberculosis. Post mortem examination confirmed the phthisis, but the condition of the heart was unsuspected.
The pericardium is greatly thickened and adherent and there are recent deposits of fibrinous lymph. There was extensive pleuritic adhesion. Microscopically the pericardium proper is only slightly thickened by cellular infiltration but much new material partially organised in its upper layers but recent and fibrinous in its more superficial layers, is superimposed. The deeper layers contain numerous small caseous patches and many giant-cell formations are found in the superficial layers.
