TitleThoracic Nerve showing Ganglioneuroma
Creator A. Logan
DescriptionThoracic Nerve showing Ganglioneuroma (rare and benign tumour of the cells of the nervous system), from a male aged 31 years.
The condition was symptomless and special investigations unhelpful in arriving at a precise diagnosis.
An ovoid smooth brownish tumour from which the surrounding tissues have stripped cleanly. On the cut surface the centre of the mass is paler than the rest of the tumour and is surrounded by an irregular and incomplete ring of haemorrhages. A few scattered haemorrhages in other areas are present. The general pattern of the tumour is of a uniform brown texture with a few irregular fine strands of fibrous tissue.
On microscopical examination the tumour consists of a loose tissue the main constituent cell of which is spindle shaped. There is a tendency for these to be arranged in bundles. In some areas typical ganglion cells are present. The appearances are those of a ganglioneuroma.
