Object numberGC.11816
TitleRight mediastinum with neurofibroma
DescriptionFrom a female aged 52 years, who was found in a mass radiography campaign to have a 14 cm. posterior mediastinal opacity. It is probably a neurofibroma WhiCh had eroded the 5th and 6th ribs near their angles and showed projections into several, intervertebral foramina. It had produced no symptoms and was resected only because of the risk of malignancy.
The specimen is a half section of a spherical tumour with a diameter of over 10 cm. Externally the neoplasm is clothed by the pleura beneath which coursing over the tumour are numerous large thin—walled blood vessels. On section the tumour shows areas with two main characteristics: a pale yellow tissue in which are numerous minute cystic spaces; and translucent gelatinous areas with in places white fibrous strands. This latter feature is most marked at the centre of the tumour. There is
no evidence of infiltration.
