DescriptionCase of two steel amputating knives of the Liston type, with ebony handles. The wooden case they are housed in is lined with velvet, and there is space for three knives indicating one is missing. They were made by Young & Sons, Edinburgh in the mid-nineteenth century, marked with 'Youngs Cutler to her Majesty Edinburgh'. Engraved on the lid is the name of the owner:
"Dr. James D. Gillespie".
James D. Gillespie, M.D., FRSEd, was a contemporary of James Syme, and Assistant Surgeon to the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh.
