Subcutaneous tissue with filariasis

Object numberGC.7682
TitleSubcutaneous tissue with filariasis
DescriptionPortion of tissue from the foot, showing changes due to filarial obstruction of the lymph vessels.
From a 27 year old woman from Sierra Leone, who had experienced swelling of the right foot for 10 years. This had produced such deformity that she could not walk normally.
There were no sinuses present and a radiogram showed no osseous change. Incision showed the affection to be limited to the subcutaneous tissue.
The portion of tissue removed indicates the extent of the subcutaneous hypertrophy. The structure is close and fibrous and little fat is present between the fibrous strands. There is no evidence of tuberculosis and the appearances are those produced by chronic lymph-vascular obstruction.
