DescriptionLymph vessels. Portion of facial tissues showing changes due to filariasis with obstruction of the
From a male Limbah (Sierra Leone) aged 38 years in whom swelling of the face during three years had produced great deformity, (26.(2).f.5.). Incision showed the forehead tumour infiltrating the scalp, without line of demarcation. Removal in mass was not attempted.
The subcutaneous tissue is hypertrophied, dense, hard, and fibrous-looking. Microscopic examination shows a great overgrowth of fibrous tissue forming a hard fibromatous condition, but permeated with lymph spaces, oedematous, and with areas of aggregations of round and plasma cells. In places there are small follicles and giant cells, but the process is not tuberculous. The condition is one of chronic fibrous subcutaneous oedema of filariasis.
