TitleThymus showing thymoma
DescriptionThymus showing thymoma
From a female aged 62 years, treated by right thoractomy March 1974. Clinical history in GC ledger
The whole tumour before section was roughly ovoid, 11 x 8 x 6cm, On surface, presumably the anterior, is smooth and covered with a glistening membrane of ?pleura. Posteriorly the covering is defective and the surface covered onlt by transluscent thin areolar tissue. The major blood supply entered from the upper pole of the tumour.
The tumour was sectioned in the antero-posterior plane. The cut surface shows the tumour to have a peripheral zone of pale homogenous tissue while more centrally the tumour is softer. This may be due to the initial fixation.
Microscopically the tumour consists of masses of cells without arrangement and conforms to the diagnosis of thymoma. two types of cell are seen
1. Large number of deeply staining lymphocytes
2. Cells with less deeply staining nuclei and considerable cytoplasm. These tend to be fusiform and arranged in strands but there appearance is more epithelial cells than fibroblasts.
One or two Hanssall's corpuscles are seen and a few small cystic spaces lined by the epithelioid cells are also present. Mitoses are not numerous, but the appearance is that of rapid growth and may be malignant.
