TitleAneurysm of the Abdominal Aorta
DescriptionVertical section of an aneurysm of the abdomical aorta from a male aged 65 years. The aneurysm was only found at post mortem examination and was symptomless during life. The blood that has caused the artery to balloon has clotted and a relatively straight channel through it is lined by laminated clot. This artery provides most of the blood to the abdominal cavity and so if an aneurysm like this ruptures it is life threatening as a large amount of blood can be lossed very quickly into the cavity.
Cause of death: post operative peritonitis. A total gastrectomy was performed.
Atherosclerotic aneurysm of the abdominal aorta 10cm x 5cm. The aneurysm is typical in location, lying between the origin of the renal arteries and the bifurcation, and there is a relatively straigh channel through it lined by laminated clot.
