Aorta showing atherosclerosis

Object numberGC.12097
TitleAorta showing atherosclerosis
DescriptionSegment of the aorta opened to demonstrate very extensive atherosclerosis. Externally in the specimen, some variation in colour suggests underlying disease but this is not marked. Internally the whole of the intima shows abnormality. There are numerous raised yellowish white plaques of atheroma and many of these demonstrate complete destruction of the surface epithelium - atheromatous ulceration. In a few it is clear that the endothelium has been raised at the margins of these ulcers so that the endothelium forms little frills and flaps. This is the explanation of the frequency with which thrombosis occurs and indicates the possible origin of a dissecting aneurysm.
