DescriptionSpecimen and Histological Glass Slides x1
Enterogenous cyst, from a female aged 32 years.
No symptoms are reported but on radiological examination an upper right para-mediastinal opacity was present with oesophageal displacement. At operation the cyst was found in close relation to the oesophagus. Histological examination indicated the cyst was probably enterogenous in type derived from primitive foregut.
The specimen shows an elongated cyst measuring approximately three inches in its long diameter and one inch transversely. The outer wall has separated cleanly from the surrounding tissue, few minor adhesions being present. The wall is only slightly translucent and appears to be lined by a smooth mucous membrane.
On microscopic examination, the wall consists of connective tissue with a few plain muscle fibres and patchily distributed small groups of epithelial cells representing the mucosa.
