Heart, mitral valve, prosthesis

Object numberGC.13876
TitleHeart, mitral valve, prosthesis
CreatorHammersmith, A. Logan
DescriptionWet specimen in a glass jar.
Heart with a Hammersmith valve replacement, from a 42 year old housewife. 3 years previously she had the artifical valve replacement of her mitral valve which was then severely affected by rheumatic heart disease. As can be seen, the disc of the Hammersmith valve has dislocated from its ring and is now situated in the thoratic aorta, causing complete blockage. The ring of the valve in the original location shows some irregularity of its margin which may have accounted for the displacement of the valve.
