Left ventricle with acute myocardial infarction

Object numberGC.12070
TitleLeft ventricle with acute myocardial infarction
DescriptionFrom a male aged 80 who died suddenly while going to bed.
The specimen is that of an adult heart the left ventricle atrium and aorta have been opened. The heart is generally enlarged. Externally there is excess of subpericardial fat and close to the apex, but difficult to observe a circular purplish patch.
The left ventricle is dilated and the wall shows some hypertrophy of the myocardium and some greyish white streaks indicative of fibrosis. The mitral and aortic valves show no abnormality. At the commencement of the aorta there is a localised patch of atheroma but no gross disease. There has been a recent infarction of the ventricular wall extending upwards from the apex. Extensive yellow homogeneous areas are present in the internal half of the ventricular wall with a marginal zone of congestion. The overlying endocardium is congested and raised by underlying haemorrhage.
