TitleHeart showing pericarditis with effusion
DescriptionHeart showing pericarditis with effusion
Pericarditis is the infection of the membrane covering the heart, and effusion is when the space between the membrane and the heart itself is filled with an excess of fluid.
Here, the pericardial sac is enormously distended. This was due to the presence in it of a large quantity of thick pus. The surfance of the visceral and parietal serous pericardium are covered with a later of fibrino-purulent exudate in which organisation has proceeded to some extent. The development of vascular granulation tissue is especially evident on the surface of the parietal serous pericardium.
The heart is contracted and compressed, appearing small in relation to the large size of the pericardial sac.
Note: Pneumococcal infection, no pneumonia found at autopsy.
