TitleHeart, Rupture of the Left Ventricle
DescriptionWet specimen in a glass jar. Heart, showing a rupture of the left ventricle from a male aged 32 years, a railway shunter.
He was seen to emerge from between two trucks being shunted, and to walk six yards. He then cried out and fell to the ground. When picked up he was found to be dead. At the post mortem examination the pericardium (the sac surrounding the heart) was found to be filled with blood. There were no wounds to the skin, no bruising of the soft tissues, no fracture of the ribs, and no other internal injuries, but it was presumed that he had been crushed between the trucks.
The rupture is on the anterior wall of the left ventricle, about 8cm in length. The muscle of the heart wall is of normal appearance and on closer inspection under microscope showed no signs of disease.
