Pleura showing fibrosarcoma

TitlePleura showing fibrosarcoma
DescriptionA fibrosarcoma which comes from the costal pleura, the part of the membrane lining the chest cavity that covers the ribs and the muscles in between
From an intemperate female aged 35 years who during two or three years had obscure pulmonary symptoms and a few days before death phonation became defective and she could not lie down.
On autopsy there was some peritoneal effusion and a large right hydrothorax. Firmly adherent to the upper part of the right pleura and slightly to the lung, was a large solid bilobular tumour. The left lung and pleura were normal, but the heart was displaced to the left. The tumour was encapsuled and had a uniform pale red granular surface on section. Its substance was somewhat friable and comparatively avascular.
The tumour is homogeneous and smooth on the surface, though slightly lobulated. On microscopic examination the characters are those of a fibrosarcoma in which the fibrous element is cellular and somewhat hyaline.
