DescriptionLung - tuberculous upper right lobe and empyema. From a male aged 45. Five years previously he became easily fatigued and developed a dry cough.
The preparation consists of the upper right lobe and an associated large tuberculous empyema. The upper lobe has been sectioned in its long axis and the incision extended to open the upper part of the empyema. The lobe on section shows scattered foci of caseation, the largest being only 3 mm. in diameter. There is considerable fibrosis and crowding of the bronchi and vessels. The empyema cavity, which extended down to the diaphragm, has shrunken during preparation and the purulent contents have escaped. It is seen to have a thick wall (4 mm.) consisting of dense fibrous tissue with a thin lining of tuberculous granulation tissue.
