The preparation is half of a sagittal section of a middle finger, showing a melanoma.
From an elderly female in whom the tumour had been noticed over fourteen months. There was metastatic enlargement of the lymph nodes.
The tumour has originated in the skin of the flexor aspect and forms an oval mass extending from near the base of the proximal to the middle of the middle phalanx. It is yellowish-grey on the surface with irregular areas of brown discoloration. On section the pigmented areas vary from a light brown to black. Microscopic examination shows the tumour-cells large and oval though some are spindle-shaped. Granules of pigment are present in many parts between the cell masses.
