Destruction of the mandible by overlying skin carcinoma

Object numberGC.2888
TitleDestruction of the mandible by overlying skin carcinoma
DescriptionDestruction of the mandible by overlying skin carcinoma
This jaw was resected because of advanced cancer. The cancer began in the skin at the lower lip and grew downwards and eroded inwards destroying the bone underlying the chin and lower jaw generally.
The prepartion is a portion of the left half of the lower jaw of an old person, in which epithelioma of the lip had invaded the bone. Just behind the mental foramen the alveolar border of the bone has been invaded and its substance opened out and absorbed.
A portion of the lateral surface has been removed to show the mandibular canal and the cancellous bone which is not affected. The alveolar border has been decalcified and absorbed without any new bone formation or alteration of the bone in the immediate neighbourhood of the carcinoma.
