TitleMolar showing a calcified follicular odontome in section
DescriptionTeeth. The mandibular left. molar showing, in section, a calcified follicular odontome.
From a Chinese male aged 22 years in whom a painless and slowly growing hard tumour had increasingly deformed the posterior portion of the left half of the mandible since childhood Three molar teeth projected from the tumour, and on to and fro manipulation of the teeth the tumour could be rocked slightly in its mandibular bed. A submandibular incision exposed a thin shell of bone, on breaking through which the tumour was easily enucleated along with the three molar teeth after the gum had been incised. In its fresh state the tumour was surrounded by a thin membrane . Convalescence was uneventful.
The surface of the tumour, though slightly nodular, is smooth and on section is extremely dense, though here and then escape of the calcareous material has left irregular shallow spaces. The circumferential part of the tumour is more compact than the central portion but neither has the characteristic appearance of bone. Microscopically examination shows atypical tissue which is more like bone than like crusta petrosa. In this case the tumour is probably better referred to as bone though it has no Haversian systems, an! the bone cells and canals are irregularly arranged and few in number. It is undoubtedly a calcified follicular odontome.
