Lower permanent teeth in section
Object numberGC.12190
TitleLower permanent teeth in section
DescriptionPortion of the left adult mandible from which the labial surface of the bone has been removed and the roots of the teeth exposed by vertical section. The mandibular canal is exposed from the mandibular foramen as far as the posterior root of the first molar. The second molar has not been sectioned and apparently has not erupted and posterior to it is an oval cavity which probably contained the germ of the third molar. The section of the dental roots shows their structure, the adamant capping the ivory and enclosing the pulp in the tooth cavity, and round the root lined externally by the substantia ossea the alveolar periosteum can be recognised. The specimen has at one time been injected but the colour has faded and the vascularity which the preparation was designed to show is not in evidence.
