DescriptionParasites — guineaworm abscess.
From a female from African aged 8. There was a scar on the left leg the result of a guineaworm infection three years previously. Recently a swelling was discovered in the lumbar region. It was soft and painless and thought to be a lipoma. The lesion was excised and found to be a guineaworm cyst.
The preparation has shrunken due to fixation. The abscess cavity with its wall of granulation and fibrous tissue is discoid in shape with a narrow prolongation which was detached during the operation. The female parasite worm partly occupied this prolongation and loops of it now hang free.
