Ankle joint with tuberculous arthritis
Object numberGC.11101
TitleAnkle joint with tuberculous arthritis
DescriptionAnkle joint with tuberculous arthritis
The preparation is a right ankle, injected and laid open to show tuberculous arthritis.
The anterior segment of a corona]. vertical section of the distal epiphysis of the tibia has been turned distally to expose the talo-crural articulation. The medial malleolus, over which a portion of skin has been retained to show the opening of two sinuses, is excavated by an irregular cavity with necrotic-looking lining. The trochlea of the talus is extremely vascular and it has been apparently deprived of its cartilage of encrustation, features shared by the articular surface on the tibia. One of the sinuses apparently communicates with the ankle joint distal to the medial malleolus. Part of the cartilage of encrustation has been cut from the head of the talus to expose the injected subjacent bone.
