TitleFemur showing chronic arthritis
DescriptionFemur showing chronic arthritis
This is a left femur
From an adult male whose skull was considered to indicate that he was under middle-age. Obtained "from the Crimea, taken from the bottom of the great shaft”.
The femur is a strong well-developed bone. The head shows overgrowth of bone at the margin of the articular surface especially inferiorly and superiorly, and round the fovea capitis femoris there is some light irregular osteophytic overgrowth. The distal articular surface of the femur is somewhat irregular and its margin is outlined by an irregular osteophytic ridge. At the fascial and tendinous attachments overgrowth of bone has greatly increased the roughness and prominence of the linea aspera, the glutaeal tuberosity, the apex of the small trochanter and the margins and intermuscular lines of the great trochanter. Within the trochanteric fossa a collar of new bone has formed a cup around the insertion of the obturator externus tendon.
