TitleDeformity of the shoulder joint, likely due to childhood tuberculous arthritis
DescriptionDeformity of the shoulder joint, likely due to childhood tuberculous arthritis
The preparation is an adult right humerus and scapula
Description:
The bones are of less than average size. The scapula is well formed but the proximal half of the humeral diaphysis is somewhat flattened mediolaterally and has a slight medial concavity
The glenoid cavity is increased in area and almost circular from extension by a shallow collar of bone around its margin. Its surface is devoid of cartilage of encrustation, shallow and porous from innumerable
minute perforations. The bone at the periphery of the glenoid cavity is compact, smooth and in places eburnated. The head of the humerus is flattened spherical and towards the margin in its posterior
half the cartilage of encrustation is indented with numerous small punctures. Around the articular surface there projects a collar of bone most developed inferiorly, smooth on its joint surface but elsewhere
nodular and rough. The intertubercular sulcus is short and narrow.
There is no evidence of chronic arthritis at the elbow joint.
The deformity of the joint has doubtless followed a non-suppurative tuberculous arthritis in childhood.
