Skeleton showing syphilitic periostitis

TitleSkeleton showing syphilitic periostitis
DescriptionSkeleton without the skull, showing changes in several of the bones due to syphilitic periostitis.
The skeleton belongs to an adult male
The skeleton shows the predilection syphilitic periostitis has for surfaces other than those for fascial, tendinous and ligamentous attachments. There is a porous thickening with proximal striation of the anterior surface of the distal third of the right humerus limited by the lateral and medial epicondylic lines, the area covered by the sub-brachialis periosteum.
Similar markings are present on the popliteal surface of the right femur and have extended medially and laterally giving the distal third of the femoral diaphysis a fusiform enlargement. Corresponding changes are present about the middle third of the medial surface of the diaphysis of the left femur and extensive brown striated patches occupy the middle third of the lateral surface of the right tibia and the lateral surface of the left tibia.
