TitleThe Blacksmith Dentist
Creator Raimondo Pereda (originator)
DescriptionThe Blacksmith Dentist. Bronzed spelter casting. Raimondo Pereda (1840-1915). Late nineteenth century.
Portrayes a blacksmith about to extract a tooth from a man seated on a roughly hewn wooden block.
Noteworthy features of this work are:
The artist's profound knowledge of anatomy. His attention to detail, e.g. the nails (in the region of 50) on the soles and heels of the sufferer's shoes are reproduced with meticulous care.
The delineation of the operator's determined demeanour and the patient's agony of anticipation is admirably executed. The instrument used for extraction is of very unusual design resembling a billhook with a wooden handle, similar to that of a dental key.
Signed on the upper surface of the base, R. Pereda.
