DescriptionJapanese coloured wood-block print (one panel of a triptych) by Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi (1798-1861), mid-19th century.
It depicts a lady seated tranquilly in the background apparently supervising the work of her pupils. In a corner, a kneeling man is using crude forceps to extract a woman's tooth. There are three dentures in the foreground to imply these are also on offer.
As this print bears censors' seals, it was made 1842-1854, the period during which censorship prevailed.
