DescriptionThe fibrous pericardium with the adherent portion of the diaphragm, the large vessels and the roots of the lungs dried and varnished. The contents of the pericardium have been removed, the pericardium having been opened anteriorly, and extrapericardially the large blood vessels are coloured. The superior vena cava and inferior vena cava are coloured blue and the aortic arch with the innominate artery and short portions of the left common carotid and left subclavian arteries arising from it painted red: Inferior to the aortic arch the pulmonary artery, coloured blue, passes towards the root of the left lung and posterior to the aortic arch the distal part of the trachea and the commencement of the bronchi are coloured yellow. At the roots of the lungs, scarcely recognizable as such in their dried condition, the openings of the pulmonary arteries are identifiable within the pericardium.
