TitleHip joint showing chronic arthritis
DescriptionHip joint showing chronic arthritis
The preparation is the acetabular portion of the os innonainatum with the proximal portion of the femur of the left hip, showing changes due to chronic arthritis.
The articular and synovial capsules have been removed and the ligamentum teres divided. The cartilage of encrustation on the head of the femur has been irregularly absorbed from the fovea over the superior surface to within some 10 mm. of the superior margin. In this irregular area the cartilage has lost its characteristic homogeneity and smoothness and appears fragmented and granular and the cartilage of encrustation surrounding it presents an irregular and frayed margin. More anteriorly the cartilage is grooved in two broad shallow depressions running for some distance transversely around the head and here also the characteristic appearance of the cartilage is lost and in the deepest part of the largest groove the surface is of compact bone. The synovial capsule around the non-articular part of the acetabulum is slightly villous and the part corresponding to the femoral changes is hypertrophic.
