TitleBougies of Lister's design
DescriptionBougies are tubes of metal or another material that a physician inserts into or though a body passageway, such as the oesophagus, to diagnose or treat a condition. A bougie may be used to widen a passageway, guide another instrument into it or dislodge an object. Lister designed this type which curved and has an olive shaped end. The curve was suggested by James Syme and the olive-headed point was a great help in the dilation of sinuses.
