DescriptionColloid goitre: benign enlargement of thyroid tissue.
From a female aged 54 years. During the last 3 to 5 months she had experienced “choking” and breathlessness which were becoming progressively more severe.
The specimen demonstrates the characteristic features of a colloid goitre. The right lobe is moderately enlarged and the posterior segment of this lobe has been left “in situ” at operation. The left lobe which weighed 4¾ ozs. as a fresh specimen is greatly enlarged and projected downwards to the thoracic inlet to a degree not apparent in the mounted specimen.
The surface is lobulated - some lobules are pale yellow, others from haemorrhage are puce. The pyramidal lobe also shows colloid cyst formation.
