DescriptionThyreoid gland, showing secondary toxic goitre.
The thyreoid gland is enlarged in a uniform manner to approximately double its normal size. Its cut surface presents numerous minute colloid-filled vesicles. There are no adenomatous nor nodular formations. The appearance is typical of a well iodized hyperplastic thyreoid. Microscopic examination shows vesicles filled with well stained colloid interspersed with areas of parenchymatous hyperplasia. Many of the distended vesicles contain residual tall papilliform projections, indicative of a former phase of hyperplasia.
