DescriptionPart of a Thyroid gland showing lymphadenoid goitre (Hashimoto’s Disease). From a female aged 43 years, who had had slight fulness of the neck since puberty.
Operation - bilateral partial lobectomy. The goitre was of the ring type, the lobes of the thyroid almost meeting in the mid-line behind the pharynx.
Each lobe is two or three times the normal size, firm in consistency, smooth in contour, and the capsule is not thickened nor unduly adherent. The cut surface is pinkish-yellow in colour, and has the appearance of fibrolipomatous tissue, no vesicles being visible to the naked eye.
Micro-sections show extensive infiltration with lymphocytes, an occasional germ centre and also well marked fibrous hyperplasia. The gland tissue is for the most part replaced and the remnants show various forms of degeneration. The condition Is probably a late phase of the disease.
