DescriptionSix surgical instruments of steel with rosewood handles, made by Gardner, Edinburgh, in a solid silver presentation case engraved on top with a wild boar head and the words 'Do Good Bold' (Spence family crest and motto).
The case inner is gilt lined and hallmarked with: H&I (the maker's initials, Hamilton & Inches); a lady's head (duty paid on the silver); a thistle and a castle (made in Edinburgh); and an 'X' (1879-80). An engraved inscription reads: 'To Professor Spence, in rememberance of his kindness & professional skill, from his ever grateful patient William Ziegler, August, 1880.'
Professor James Spence (1812-1882) was a surgeon and Edinburgh Chair of Systematic Surgery 1864-1882. He was succeeded in this post by John Chiene.
